Acupressure is the practice of placing pressure on the acupoints to induce pain relief and healing. It is as old as or older than acupuncture -- so at least 5,000 years old! Everyday aches and pains and common complaints can easily be treated at home-- all you need is your fingers and occasionally some elbow grease. Beware of sharp nails though! This can make acupressure a bit more painful, though, in some cases, this can actually improve the results.
In this series, we will be covering the so-called “Command Points”-- points that are said to help or even cure the conditions they treat no matter the cause. They very effective and super easy to remember…
So let’s learn our final point:
Dū 26 - 人中 - Rén Zhōng (pronounced: “Run J-oh-ng”) - “the Middle of Man”
Everyone should know this point. This point is very useful in emergent situations. Knowing this may save someone’s life! All Chinese people seem to know this point. I watched as bystander after bystander tried to press this point on someone after a bad car wreck in China. They were trying to revive him after the medical team gave up. He was in too bad a shape though and did not reawaken. It was worth a shot. This point is highly effective for loss of consciousness and fainting for various reasons: dizziness, low blood sugar, fright, concussion/trauma, drowning, you name it. Never forget this point as it could save someone’s life!
Here’s how you do it. You’ll want to press firmly and keep pressure for about 30s and relax for 15s. Do this about 3-5x and things should be improved. You may add small circular rotations if you feel like it as this can make it easier on the patient. (Just a note: to get the full effect of this point, you will actually need to press VERY deeply. Again this is mainly used for emergencies so do not fear your nails might cut through their skin. If it works, they won’t care!)
This is a great substitute in case you forget CPR in the craziness of the moment.
As always I would love to hear your positive experiences with acupressure. Let me know if you need extra help or have any other questions!
Thanks for reading this series on the Command Points. Remember you have all the tools you need to heal yourself and your family right at your fingertips! ‘Til next time.
